Some Any

When to use Some and when Any?

Explanations
 Examples
Any is used for questions
  • Is there any milk today?
  • Do you have any idea what time he’ll arrive?
Any is used for negative sentences
  • I don’t have any money
  • There isn’t any sugar anymore
Some is used for affirmative sentences
  • There are some apples in the fridge
  • I need some butter for the cake

Some for questions (occasionally)

We use some for questions when we know the answer to the question will be yes or when we want the answer to be yes.

  • Do you want some?
  • Did something happen to you? (cuando ves claramente que algo le ha pasado a la persona)

Someone, somebody, anyone, anybody, somewhere, anything, sometime, etc.

The rules mentioned above are also valid for all other words with some or any in them. These words are: someone, anyone, somebody, anybody, something, anything, somewhere, anywhere, sometime, anytime, someplace, anyplace.

  • Is there anything to eat?
  • Yes, there is something to eat
  • There is somebody at the door
  • There isn’t anywhere open at this time of the day
  • Sometime today I’ll go to the supermarke

NO

We’ve said that we use any for the negative sentences. We can also use no.  However, it is not used the same way as in many other languages. In many languages you can use two negative words to make a negative sentence. English doesn’t allow this. A sentence like: I don’t have no money is wrong, because we have the word don’t (do not) and the word no: both are negative words. The correct way to use the word no is as follows:

  • Is there anything to eat?
  • Yes, there is something to eat
  • There is somebody at the door
  • There isn’t anywhere open at this time of the day
  • Sometime today I’ll go to the supermarke

No is also used for questions. But remember, you musn’t use any other negatives.

  • Is there no milk?
  • Is there nothing you can do?
