    ON vs OFF

We say ON when we want to indicate the something is functioning, e.g.

    The television is ON

We say OFF when we want to indicate the something is NOT functioning, e.g.

    The lights are OFF

Generally speaking, ON is a preposition:

The book is ON tyhe table

    And OFF is an adverb:

    Take OFF your coat
