What are do and does?
Do and does come from the verb To Do.
There are two ways to use the verb To Do: as a normal verb or as an auxiliary verb.
The difference between Do and Does

| We use Does for the third person singular | - He/she/it
- so that means also: my mother, Tom, the cat, his car, etc.

- She does homework
- Tom does the dishes

- His cousin does the gardening

In the case of My mother, be careful. The word my can be confusing, but my mother is still the third person singular and so you must put does.

Do-Does used as a normal verb
The verb To Do is one of the most used verbs in English. When To Do is used as a normal verb it performs an action.

- to do homework
- to do the cleaning
- to do something
- to do nothing

Do-Does used as an auxiliary verb
The verb To Do is also used as an auxiliary verb.
Examples:
| - Do you like coffee?
- Where do they drink coffee?
- Does she want an ice-cream?
- What does she want?
- I don’t like coffee
- They don’t drink three coffees a day
- She doesn’t want an ice-cream
- John doesn’t want anything

What is the meaning of Do, Does, Don’t and Doesn’t?
The answer is that is has no direct meaning. However, it is indispensable for the formation of the question and the negative answer in the present simple and the past simple.
Short answer with do-does
There are two ways to answer a question: with the long answer or with the short answer. For the short answers we always use the auxiliary verb. Here you have some examples:

| Does she go to the cinema every week? | Yes, she does |
